Summer camp typically means sunshine, swimming, sports, sweat, bugs, and a lot of
time spent outdoors – all things that can have a big impact on our skin! Whether your
child is heading to camp for the day or packing for sleepaway camp, a basic skincare
routine can make all the difference in preventing summer skin concerns.
Make sure not to overcomplicate things, especially for kids heading to sleepaway camp.
This is not the time to introduce new acne regimens, scrubs, or multiple treatment
products. If your child is prone to breakouts, it is best to establish an acne routine well
ahead of camp to avoid irritation or unexpected reactions while away from home.
Heat and sweat, sunscreen, pool chlorine, bug sprays, dirt and humidity along with not
washing the face properly can quickly lead to clogged pores, acne, irritation, and
sunburns. The main goal in a camp setting is to support the skin barrier while protecting
against environmental exposure.
Focus on a basic regimen.
Sun protection is Non-Negotiable
Daily SPF use is the foundation of skincare, especially in the summer. Choose broad-
spectrum or mineral-based sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Apply generously before
leaving the house and remind the kids to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or
excessive sweating. Sunscreen sticks are a great, easy-to-apply option to send with
your children to camp. We also recommend sun protective clothing such as hats,
sunglasses, and SPF shirts when possible.
Don’t forget Bug Protection
Insect bites are an inevitable part of camp life. We recommend repellents containing
picaridin, which is effective against mosquitoes and ticks yet gentle on the skin and less
irritating than most options. Apply bug spray AFTER sunscreen.
Keep it Clean
Children at camp are exposed to sweat, dirt, and sunscreen buildup every day. Provide
a gentle facial cleanser for morning and evening washes. Follow cleansing with a
lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer.
Sending your child to summer camp is an exciting adventure, but it’s important to keep
their skin protected and healthy. Sticking to a simple regimen including sun protection, bug
repellent, and regular cleansing will help prevent many common skin issues and
ensure your child enjoys camp to the fullest.
