2026 Update
Measles, once nearly eliminated in the United States due to vaccinations, is making a concerning comeback. With many recent cases reported in Florida, families in Pinellas County should be aware of the risks and how to protect their children.
At Mahoney Dermatology Specialists, we are committed to keeping our community informed about measles symptoms in children and the importance of prevention.
Why Measles Is a Serious Concern
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses known. It spreads through the air and can remain in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.
This makes outbreaks in schools, daycares, and public spaces especially concerning. In some cases, measles can lead to serious complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, dehydration, and even swelling of the brain known as encephalitis. Young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to severe illness, which is why early awareness and prevention are so important for families throughout our community.
Who Is Most at Risk?
- Infants under 12 months (too young for vaccination)
- Unvaccinated children
- Children with weakened immune systems
Early Measles Symptoms in Children
Recognizing early symptoms can help prevent the spread. Watch for:
- High fever (often over 101–104°F)
- Runny nose
- Persistent cough
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
A Key Early Sign: Koplik Spots
Small white spots inside the cheeks and on the roof of the mouth, called Koplik spots, often appear before the rash and are a classic sign of measles.
Why the MMR Vaccine Is Essential
The MMR vaccine is safe and effective, providing about 97% protection with two doses. It is the best defense against measles outbreaks in Florida.
